Nectarine Garden

  Written by: Hasamuddin Hamdard

Afghanistan has a vast area of barren lands and most people do not take benefit of them. AEPO’s writer/producer has talked to Abdul Waseh Haidary, a resident of Kareez-e-Meer village, Shakardara district, Kabul province.

Haidary says about his activity: “This land was barren and we were not using it. I made ready for growing nectarines trees 6 years ago. I spent about 40 thousand Afghanistan to prepare the land for growing saplings. This sapling does not have fruits during the first three years and these threes yield on the fourth year. On the fourth year, I collected about 5 boxes nectarine from each tree. The price of each box of the nectarine is between 25-400 Afghanis. And I have about 300 trees of this fruit and I have gotten more benefit from the barren land. I spray the garden according to the guidance of agricultural experts.”

Bookselling in A Taxi:

AEPO’s writer/producer had a trip to Balkh province, and there she has talked to a taxi driver, Ghulam Muhammad Mubariz, who sell books in his taxi.

Mubariz says: “I started my job as a taxi driver about four years ago. I was used to reading books at home. Once I saw that when one of my friends was purchasing pant and shirt for himself, he was buying books from his extra money, and finally, he made a bookstore. I thought that I could also have a bookstore. I made a small bookshelf and I put in my taxi and I put some books on it. If a passenger wants to study during his travel, he could read any of these books or if he/she wants to buy it, I sell it. I earn the money which I get from the selling of the books in a special box and after a few days, I buy more books from that money. My incomes are more than before.
