Hemorrhoids and Food

Hemorrhoids are one of the diseases that humans might suffer from them at different stages of life, but elders are more likely to be infected with this disease. Those who suffer from hemorrhoids must refer to the doctor, but it is also necessary to pay attention to their food.

AEPO’s writer/producer has talked to some patients and a physician about this disease.

A woman from Qarabagh district, Kabul province says: “I have hemorrhoids and I am suffering from irritation, itching, and blood is also seen when I go to the toilet.”

Muhammad Farhad, a resident of Chaharasiab district, Kabul province says: “I have hemorrhoids. At the beginning, it was a clot and now when I go to the toilet, I suffer from irritation and blood is also seen.”

Doctor Ajmal Barakat, the trainer of specialists at Afshar hospital, Kabul city says: “Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum. Hemorrhoids could develop inside the rectum (internal hemorrhoids) or under the skin around the anus (external hemorrhoids).”

What do people think about the causes of hemorrhoids?

Sami Bayat, a resident of Ghazni province says: “I have heard the pepper is helpful for hemorrhoids.”

Farhad says: “eating beef, bean, peas, and salad, increase the pain of hemorrhoids.”

Doctor Barakat says: “The most common cause of hemorrhoids is repeated straining while going to the toilet. This is often caused by severe cases of constipation or diarrhea. Straining gets in the way of blood flow into and out of the area.

 Swelling, itching or irritation in the anal region; pain or discomfort are the symptoms of hemorrhoids and if not treated on time, the patient might face Anemia.”

What should hemorrhoids patients eat?

A woman, a resident of Paghman district, Kabul province says: “I am suffering from hemorrhoids. I started to eat soft foods and boiled water and these diets helped me.”

Farhad says: “I am always eating ladyfingers, mango, watermelon, and grapes and they reduce my pain.”

Doctor Barakat says: “fiber-rich foods like vegetables, fresh fruits, especially eating apple and apricot are useful for hemorrhoids patients and they should avoid eating rice and potatoes and they should exercise regularly.”
