The Gout

Gout is a type of inflammatory disease caused by accumulation and deposition of uric acid in the tissues of the body, especially in the joints. This disease sometimes causes serious health problems to the patients.

Abdul Aziz, a resident of Farza district, Kabul province says: “I have pain in my knee all the time, even in sleeping time too. I could not fold my foot. The physicians diagnosed it gout.”

Zarghona, a resident of Logar province says: “The joints of my hands, especially the joints of my food became red, swollen and painful and one of my fingers has become bigger than the others.”

Doctor Abdul Bari Rahemee, an orthopedist in Wazir Akbar Khan hospital, Kabul city says: “Symptoms of the disease include swelling, redness and severe pain in the foot thumb. This disease might also be seen in the swelling and pain of joints of the body. If not treated, it might cause kidney stones and distraction of some important organs of the human body.”

What do people think about the cause of this disease?

Najia, a resident of Nangarhar province says: “My grandmother suffers from gout and I think its cause might be the humid room and eating some medicines without the prescription of the doctor.”

Doctor Rahemee says: “The causes of this disease are the highest age; increasing uric acid; eating fatty foods and meat, blood cholesterol, mental stress… and the use of some pain relieve medications.”

How people treat gout at homes?

Riagul, a resident of Shewaki, Chaharasiab district, Kabul province says: “my husband’s sister is suffering from gout. She used any kind of home medicines but it did work.”

Barialai, a resident of Samangan province says: “I am suffering from knees and legs pain. I always take medicines according to the prescription of the doctor; I avoid meat and fatty foods and eat fresh fruits and vegetables.”

The doctor confirms that fresh fruits and vegetables are useful but fatty and fried foods are harmful to gout disease but going to the doctor for diagnosing the disease is very important.”
