Our skin is the largest organ in our body and helps protect our body from germs that live on our skin. So, anything that breaks the skin is a wound because when the skin is broken, there's a risk of germs getting into the body and causing an infection but how could we protect our wound against germs?

AEPO’s writer/producer has talked to some patients and a physician about this issue.

Ghulam Hazrat, a patient in Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital, Kabul city says: “I had a wound in my hand and I did not take care of it. The inflammation of the wound caused me to lose my fingers.”

Haji Hayatullah, a resident of Logar province says: “I had wound in my knee and in my hand. I did not take care of it and they became infected and could not be cured easily and I suffer the pain of them.”

Doctor Daud Ahmadzai, a physician in Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital says: “ if anyone does not take care of wounds, he/she might face inflammation, redness, itching, and pain of the wound and if not treated on time, the patient would face anemia and a spot might leave on the skin after healing the wound.

The Causes:

Haji Hashim, a resident of Khost province says that if a person does not take attention of a minor cut, the cut might become infectious and face him/her with a serious health problem.

Doctor Wahidullah Saqib, another physician in Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital approves what the people said. He says: “minor cuts could be infected by dust, uncontaminated water and not treated them on time, could be caused the inflammation and redness of the wound which might create serious health problems.”

Treatment:

A man, Rohullah says: “one of my relatives was putting snuff, ash, and soil on his wound.”

Ghulam Hazrat, a patient says:” I had mixed onion with ichthyol ointment and put it on my wound but the wound became worse.”

Doctor Saqib says: “Putting snuff, soil, and other materials on wounds create serious health problems. These things might make a safe environment for growing microbes which could cause tetanus. The patients should dress their minor wounds every other day and the large wounds should be dressed every day. If a person cuts any part of his/her body, he/she should wash it with pre-boiled water and dress with a clean cloth and go to a clinic for essential treatment.”
