How to encourage the Children to attend School in Afghanistan?
Most Afghan families encourage their children to attend the school but still, some children are not interested in school and they might face some problems.
The writer/producer has talked to some children, their parents and a psychiatrist about this issue.
Hematullah, a resident of Chahar Asiab district of Kabul province says:
I have 3 children, one is in 11th grade and two others are in 6th grades. They do not regularly attend the school. they usually pretend and insist to go to their uncle’s or aunt’s homes.
A girl, who does not want to mention her name says that she doesn’t go to class on Wednesday and Thursday because she has mathematics on that days.
Hamid, a resident of Farza district of Kabul province says: when was an eighth-grade student, I was not able to learn English, chemistry, and Arabic. The teacher took me to the school office and there he beat me very badly and that day I left the school.
A psychologist, professor Sharafuddin Azimi says:
Interest is the key to success. Those children who are not interested in learning, they would never learn their lessons and they might lose their self-confidence and would face some psychological problems as depression and some of them might commit a crime in the future.
A student, Ataullah says: having no encouragement and no assistance in school’s lessons cause students to become disaffected.
Sharfuddin Azimi says: family is the first supporter of the children. If they don’t pay attention to the study of their children, the children would lose their interest in learning.
The second step is the school’s environment & learning facilities and the third step refers to learning method. If a teacher does not teach according to the rules, the student might not learn the lessons easily and they might lose their enthusiasm for the learning.
Newly enrolled students might have some difficulties in the first days of the schools. The teachers have to encourage them to the lessons and behave them as their parents and parents also should help them in their daily lessons and fulfill all their school’s requirements.
