Knee Pain in Elderly

Hhumans might be exposed to various diseases. One of these is persistent knee pain in elderlies. Older people from the age of 50 onwards are more prone to knee pain.

AEPO’s writer/producer has talked to some patients and two physicians about this disease.

A woman from Kabul province, who does not want to mention her name in the program says, "I am suffering from knee pain, it burns a lot, I cannot even stand up for prayer due to severe pain. I took x-rays so many times but I got no convenient result from the treatment.”

Gulbuddin, a resident of Kabul city says, “I am about 80 years old and this is the third year I have been suffering from knee pain. In the beginning, I did not care about my disease and now my pain has increased.”

Pain, swelling, tingling in the knee, and inability to sit quietly on the chest are symptoms of knee pain," said Dr. Ahmad Shakib Mohebbi, an orthopedic trainer at Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital in Kabul city says, “Pain, swelling, tingling in the knee and inability to sit quietly on the commode are symptoms of knee pain.
If knee pain is not treated on time, the patient may need surgery or a knee replacement, which can be a problem.”

What do some patients think about the causes of knee pain?

Awrang, a resident of Logar province says, “I think that I had fallen in my childhood and now I am suffering from knee pain.”

Gul Muhammad, a resident of Kapisa province says, “I jumped over a stream and my leg lost its movement.”

Doctor Muhibi says, “Overweight, lifestyle, aging, and some diseases can cause joint damage, and genetic issues are also involved in this disease.”

How do some people treat knee pain?

Gulbuddin says, “I ride a bicycle, when I sit down, I do not fold my legs; I do my prayers on a chair and I feel better less pain in my knee.”

Samia, a resident of Kabul city says, “I am 66 years old. About 2 years back, I feel pain in my knee; the doctor advised me a special exercise and prescribed some medicines. I regularly do my exercise for about 10 minutes two times daily and take my medicines on time. It reduced my knee pain.”

Doctor Shafiqullah Aminzai, a physiotherapist at Wazir Muhammad Akbar Khan Hospital talks about the physical exercises for knee pain patients, “The patient should be exposed to the sun; should avoid sitting with feet together; has to fold legs and open them; lie on the back and move legs like a cyclist; Avoid sleeping more and walk for a while.”
