Sore Throat

Sore throat is a disease of the respiratory system, affects adults and children and most people suffer from this disease in different seasons.

 If the sore throat lasts more than 2-7 days, or if the pain is severe at the beginning, the patient has to go to the doctor for essential treatment.

 AEPO’s writer/producer has talked to some such patients and a physician about this disease.

Masihullah, a driver in Kabul city says, “I suffer more from sore throat at night and when I wake up in the morning, I cough and suffer more from sore throat.”

Mukhtar says, “If I suffer from sore throat, I cannot eat food and even I cannot swallow my saliva.” 

Husna, a resident of Kabul city says, “When I suffer from sore throat, my tonsils enlarge; I cannot swallow my spit not eating food and even I suffer from shortage of breath.”

Doctor ]Ihasanullah Rasa, ear, nose, and throat specialist at one of the hospitals in Kabul city says, “The throat is a way for breathing and swallowing foods. When it inflames, it causes pain. Sore throat is not generally very distressing and could be treated.”

What do some people think about the causes of a sore throat?

Marwa, a resident of Kabul city thinks that air pollution causes sore throat.

Gety says, “I think greasy foods and cold water cause sore throat.”

Alia, a resident of Kabul province says, “Oven smoke causes me a sore throat.”

Doctor Rasa says, “Sore throat has various causes, the onset of sore throat can be viral, or dust and air pollution, and sometimes throat-clearing causes inflammation of the throat. Contaminated foods and contaminated air also cause throat irritation and then sore throats.”

How do some patients treat a sore throat?

Rohina, a resident of Kabul city says, “When I suffer from sore throat, I avoid drinking cold water and pickles. I drink lukewarm water and rest more at home.”

Nahida says that when she is suffering from a sore throat, she avoids eating pickles and pepper and she doesn’t talk more.

Doctor Rasa says, “If the body immune system is strong, the patient would get well soon. Rest and taking hot liquids and soft foods are very useful during the sore throat. Patients, whose jobs are to talk too much, should rest at home and avoid talking too much and also avoid spicy foods that irritate the throat.

The patients should wash their hands regularly and use a facemask and avoid walking in a contaminated atmosphere.”
