Food Poisoning

As the weather warms, some diseases, including food poisoning, increase and some people suffer from this disease. Symptoms and signs of food poisoning could be seen within a few hours after eating contaminated food and cause serious problems for the patients.

AEPO’s writer/producer has talked to some patients and two physicians about symptoms; treatment and prevention of this disease.

Fariba, a resident of Panjshir province says, “Diarrhea, fever and chills, shoulder and abdominal pain, weakness and lethargy are the problems and symptoms of food poisoning and suffer from the mentioned problems.”
Ahmad Zaki, a resident of Shewaki village, Bagrami district, Kabul province says, “One I had been suffering for food poisoning. I was vomiting and had body pain.”
Infectious disease specialist, doctor Muhammadullah Mukhlis talks about this disease, “Symptoms of food poisoning usually occur after eating contaminated food. The main symptoms of food poisoning are nausea and vomiting, diarrhea might have blood, abdominal pain, lack of energy, weakness and anorexia, fever and muscle aches.If food is not digested, it causes loss of body fluids and dehydration eventually causes death of the patient.”

What do some patients think about the causes of food poisoning?

Samiullah, a resident of Nangarhar province says, “Once I ate kabab in a restaurant and it caused food poisoning.”

Shamsia, a resident of Shakardara district, Kabul province says, “Eating stale foods and not considering the cleanliness of the kitchen and eating unwashed vegetables also could cause food poisoning.”

Doctor Mukhlis says, “Eating stale foods; contaminated water; cooking more foods and not considering hygiene during cooking; cooking with contaminated hands; keeping foods in hot weather in hot places; eating contaminated vegetables and contaminated fruits could cause food poisoning.”
