Gonorrhea is a genital disease, but it could be prevented and treated. Gonorrhea affects children, adults, men, and women, but it is more common in women due to a variety of factors. AEPO’s writer/producer has talked to some patients and a physician about the symptoms, causes, and treatment of this disease.

A woman from Jawzjan province says, “I had some health problems about two years ago. I had abdominal pain and lethargy; my urine was coming out little by little. When I went to the doctor, she diagnosed that I was suffering from gonorrhea.”

A woman from Ghazni province says, “I feel bad pain and burning sensation when urinate and I suddenly cry.”

Doctor Shahla Wardak Amiri, a gynecologist at Rabia Balkhi gynecology hospital in Kabul city talks about the signs and symptoms of this disease: “Gonorrhea is a bacterial disease. Pain and burning when urinating, yellow rust or bloody discharge, dripping urine, fever, vomiting, and high blood pressure are symptoms of this disease.”

What do some patients think about the causes of this disease?

The woman from Jawzjan province says, “I don’t know about the causes of gonorrhea but I want to know about it.”

A woman, a resident of Farza district, Kabul province says, “My husband was suffering from gonorrhea and it transmitted from him to me.”

Doctor Amiri says, “The cause of this disease is microbes, which could be found due to internal malformations, that is when the bladder is not completely emptied and accumulates, and not considering cleanliness, especially during menstruation. This disease is transferable and could be transmitted from wife to husband and vice versa.”

How do some patients treat this disease at home?

A woman from Kabul city says, “Eating the seeds of ground dill is useful for gonorrhea.”

A woman from Chaharasiab district, Kabul province says, “I was suffering from gonorrhea, the wife of my brother-in-law boiled some rose and cleaned myself after defecation with that water for two days, I get rid of gonorrhea.”

I applied ghee made from cow butter and it heals my gonorrhea.”

Doctor Amiri says, “Gonorrhea doesn’t have the home remedy. The patients must go to the doctor for essential treatment. Drinking fluids like water, tea, and fruit juices could help and reduce the disease, but if left untreated, it could cause joint inflammation and kidney insufficiency.

The best way to prevent this disease is to consider cleanliness during menstruation and after childbirth and having sex, and prevent wearing tight clothes, nylon, and more going to the toilet and empty the bladder.”
