According to the information provided by Nooria Nozhat, a spokesperson for the Afghan Ministry of Education, about 16,500 schools have been built so far, funded by the government, and each school costs almost millions of Afghanis.

Most residents of the area take care of the schools in their area, but some people are indifferent to the protection and maintenance of schools. Therefore, some schools have been badly damaged and due to this issue, teachers and students are facing problems.

AEPO’s writer/producer has talked to some people about this issue.

Abdul haq, a resident of Ishkamish district, Takhar province says, “I have studied my primary school in our village. Our school had no building and we were studying under the shadow of walls or trees but later, they built a nice building for the mentioned school.

When I visited that school recently, most of the windows, glasses, and doors were broken; livestock and cattle were entering into the school and face teachers and students with problems.”

Saifullah Sargand, a resident of Gilan district, Ghazni province says, “There was only one school in our village that the students of 8 other villages were studying in that school.

Students and residents of the area were not taking care of the school and after sometimes, some students broke the glasses, windows, and doors of the school and were writing and painting on the walls of the school. These issues affect the educational background of the students.

They could not study well in such school because the noise from outside of the school and sometimes wind and dust bother them.”

What do people think about the causes of this issue?

Abdul Haq says, “Some residents of the area do not care about the future of their children. Their children break windows and glasses of the school but they do not prevent them. This issue originates from the illiteracy of the people.”

Karimullah Saadat, a resident of Arghandab district, Zabul province says, “Those students who are not aware of the benefit of taking care of school maintenance, they cause to break the glasses and windows of the schools and write and paint on the walls the classes and schools.”

How do people take care of school buildings?

Nasrat, a resident of Ghazni province says, “When I was a student, my father told me to take care of school buildings, chairs, and tables. Now I tell my small sisters and brothers that the school is built for them and they should take care of it.”

Roya, a resident of Nangarhar province says, “We take care of our school’s equipment. There is no broken chair or table. We study in a good atmosphere and have no problem.”
