Many Afghan women wear gold jewelry and nice dresses in wedding or engagement partied but those who are not enough rich, they could not buy gold and rivalry with others causes them some problems.

AEPO’s writer/producer has talked to some people about the bad consequences of this habit.

Nazirullah, a resident of Parwan province says, “I am selling car tires and I have got married about 6 years ago. When there is a wedding ceremony of one of our relatives or friends, I have to buy a precious dress for my wife otherwise a quarrel might take place between me and my wife. If I have a quarrel in house and when I go to my shop, I could not talk normally with my customers and sometimes a small issue causes a quarrel between me and my customer.”

Suhaila Stanakzai says, “One of our relatives forced her husband to buy her gold jewelry like the other woman’s jewelry that she had seen in a wedding party. Her husband had not enough money to buy her the golden sets. Finally, their quarrel reached to divorce.”

What do people think about the causes of this issue?

Aminullah, a resident of Laghman province says, “When my wife comes back from wedding ceremony, she appreciates other women’s gold jewelry pieces and wants me to buy for her too.”

Zuhal, a resident of Logar province says, “When I go to a party or a wedding ceremony, I want to be a special girl, therefore I wear a best dress and precious jewelry and I wants others to copy me.”

Professor Karima Dariz, a psychologist in Ustad Burhanuddin Rabani Education University, Kabul city talks about this issue, “The main reason that why women are jealous among themselves is the price of gold. They think that if they have more gold, they might get a better position in the community. If they are very poor but they show to others by wearing gold jewelry that they are enough rich. Having gold is more important to such women than having a good relationships with people.”

How people solve this issue?

Gulzaman, a resident of Qarabagh district, Kabul province says, “We had the bad habit of having rivalry among the women of our village. Our elders decided in a gathering that each husband should buy a gold ring and a pair of gold earrings to his wife and thus we prevented them from buying more gold jewelries.”
