Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. Most deep vein clots occur in the lower leg or thigh and might cause serious problems.

AEPO’s writer/producer has talked to some patients and a doctor about this problem.

Reezagul, a resident of Laghman province says: “I am suffering leg pain due to the blood clot in the vein of my leg. I could not bend my leg, the pain increases when I want to sit but it decreases when I walk.”

A woman, a resident of Logar province says: “blood is clotted in one of my leg’s vein. When I go in a bending down position, there is no pain but when I go straight, the pain increases in my leg and I could not even walk.”

Doctor Naqeebullah Hameed, a surgeon of the veins in Ibn Sina Hospital, Kabul city says about the symptoms of blood clot in the leg vein: “pain, swelling and tenderness in one of the legs (usually the calf); a heavy ache in the affected area; warm skin in the area of the clot; red skin, particularly at the back of the leg below the knee are the symptoms of deep vein thrombosis. These clots might transmit to the upper veins and vital organs such as the lungs, brain, heart, etc., and make worse complications.”

What do people think about the causes of deep vein thrombosis?

Waris, a resident of Farza district, Kabul province says: “I play cricket every day and I think the reason for my leg blood clot might be caused by playing cricket.”

Mujahida, a resident of Nangarhar province says: “my mother-in-law is suffering from deep vein thrombosis. She is sitting most of the time and it caused blood clot in her leg vein.”

Doctor Hameed says: “the main factors of deep vein thrombosis are slow blood circulation; blood concentration; a blow on the leg; sitting or standing for a long time; surgical operation; leg breakage; overweighting; some medicines(contraception pills) and eating more salt.”

How do people treat this problem at home?

A girl says: “my mother is suffering from deep vein thrombosis. She always wants me to climb on her leg    and also massage with salted water.”

Malik Sher Afzal says: “I am suffering from deep vein thrombosis. I have not visited a physician yet. I always massage my leg with olive oil and I feel better.”

The doctor says: “climbing on the leg; keeping leg warmer, massage and using oil for this purpose might cause the blood clot to move toward heart or lungs and block the small veins which might take the life of the affected person. Medical treatment is advised for the people suffering from deep vein thrombosis.”
