Reserving rainfall water for Irrigation

In Afghanistan, there are two types of lands: Irrigated and Rainfed lands. When there is no rain during the year, the farmers, who have rainfed land, face problems.

Abdul Hafiz Quraishi, a resident of Dehsabz, district of Kabul, says to AEPO writer/producer: “We have 12 acres land and cultivated only one acre of it due to lack of irrigated water and we lost Afs 600,000.”

Some farmers found solution to this problem. Mohammad Nadir, an elder of Aabdara village of Dehsabz says “our ancestors have built a reservoir with 18 meter length, 11 meter width and one and half meter depth. We save rainfall and snow water comes from the near mountain. All of the farmers irrigate their land from the water of the reservoir.”

director of irrigation and agriculture says if the absorbent of water is high, farmers can place a plastic in the bottom of the reservoirs.
