Difference Between Son and Daughter Education

In Afghanistan, most families understand the importance of education and they send their children to school but some parents do not provide the same facilities to the girls as they provide for boys.

The writer/producer AEPO has talked to some girls, parents and a psychologist about this issue.

Fatima, a resident of Farza district of Kabul province says:

I feel many differences between the education of my brothers and mine. I had many bad days in learning. No one wanted me to go to school. Last year, when I had the final exam, as the way to school was not safe, I asked my father to send one of my brothers with me, but he did not accept and I failed in the exam.

Huma, a resident of Maidan-Wardak Province says:

We are four brothers and three sisters. Our parents pay more attention to their sons’ education, and no one helps me in learning.

A psychologist, professor Sharafuddin Azimi says:

Sometimes, parents consider their daughters’ education useless. They only encourage their sons to learn more because they thought that the girls would go to another family but the educated boy would support his family.

Psychologically these types of girls grow very weak. They feel themselves alone; lose their self-confidence and in the future, they might face many problems.

If families help girls in learning, they would present a female doctor, engineer, teacher and so to the community and they would serve as the boys do.
