Many families help their children to study but some parents and teachers do not encourage them. Discouraging them has its adverse effects.

The writer/producer AEPO has interviewed some students, parents and teachers on the benefits of encouraging students.

Qandahari, “a boy” a resident of Qarabagh district of Kabul province says: “Due to non-encouragement, I left the school when I was in 5th grade.”Jahanzeb “ boy” a resident of Kandahar province says that she was eager to finish her school but as she is a girl, her parent banned her from school.

A psychologist, professor Muhammad Zahir Shams says: “if the students are not encouraged to their lessons, this issue might affect their self-confidence, they might lose their courage and ingenuity and might not learn well.  As a result, they would grow up in lacking courage and might face psychological problems."

On the other hand, some families and teachers encourage the students to study.

Rahila “girl” a resident of Qala-e- Zaman Khan, Kabul city says: "my family and my teachers encourage me to study. This manner makes me brave enough and I try my best to learn my lessons."

How we should encourage students?

Sherin Agha, “man” a resident of Qarabagh district of Kabul province says: “one of my brothers was not interested in studying. I bought some illustrated storybooks for him and he read them and now he has the enthusiasm to study his school lessons too.

Prof. Shams says: "rewards also helps the students to study hard but it would be better for the teachers and parents not to promise them big prizes.  encouraging verbally would increase the chances to study more. Students being encouraged by their teachers is better than the prizes promised by parents.
