School Text Books

Ministry of Education of Afghanistan spends it's more fund on printing school textbooks. These books are distributed free of charge to the students.

Some students do not take care of their books. They write in the books and also tear the books’ pages and thus most of the books would be out of use before depreciation period and other students would not be able to use these books again.

The writer/producer AEPO has talked to some students and teachers about this issue.

A student, Siraj says: on one of my exams, when I wanted to study, some of my book’s pages were torn and I was not able to study and so that I faced problems.

Another student, Silsila had the same problem and she had not gotten good marks in the exam.

A teacher, Gul Rahman says when I want to get prepared for a lesson, I notice that some pages of the book are torn and I could not get ready for teaching and when I ask the students about the new lesson, some of them say that their books don’t have these pages.

Kabir Haqmal, director of publication of the ministry of education says:

The printing of each book costs about 200-1000 Afghanis and every new book should be used for three years but unfortunately, due to students' neglect, most books are out of use over a year.

How to solve this problem?

A student from Sarobi district of Kabul province says:

When I get books from the school, I cover them because other students would also use these books too.

Another student, Zia says that when he gets books, he covers them.

Saba, a resident of Nangarhar province says that when she gets her books, she checks them. If any page is missing, she notes it on a separate paper and attaches it to its place and then covers the books.

if all students do not write in the books, do not tear the pages and cover the books, the books would last for a long time and other students could also use them.
