Eidi

In Afghanistan, many customs are left from our ancestors. One of them is Eidi (some precious gifts prepare by a spouse to his engaged-on Eid days).

Some relatives of brides force the family of brides to get more Eidi from the families of their spouses.

Some husbands face many economic problems to prepare Eidi for his spouse. Hamayun, a resident of Mazar province says to the writer/producer of AEPO:

Three years of my engagement had passed. During each Eid, the family of my father-in-law wanted me to prepare many things as gold, precious mobile phones and variety of clothes. As I was not able to prepare all of them on each Eid, it caused a quarrel between us and at the end, I had to cancel the engagement.

All of the families do not have the same customs. Maryam, another resident of Mazar province says that she asked her father-in-law’s family to prepare a very small gift in Eid not to exceed from Afs. 4000.

Assadullah, a resident of Ghazni province says:

At the beginning, there was no false custom in our area, but later, it comes to appear there in our village too. I engaged my son and convinced the opposite side about the result of the bad custom of Eidi and much more. They accepted and the elders of our village signed a treaty to get rid of from the burden of Eidi.
