High Expenditures in Wedding Ceremony

Afghans have varieties of customs, one of them is wedding expenditure. Groom has to prepare all the requirements of bride such as: many pairs of clothes, shoes, jewelries and so on.

The writer/producer of AEPO has talked about this issue with some people: Abdul Qadim, a resident of Moqur, district of Ghazni province says:

“the cash dowry in our village exceeds Afs.1200,000 which is difficult for groom to pay.” Another resident, Mohammad Fawad says:” I spent about Afs. 700,000 in my wedding ceremony. As I had not enough money, I sold my car and borrowed some money from my friends, and now I have to pay them back.”

Assadullah, a resident of Qarabagh, district of Ghazni province has found a solution for this problem.

He says:

“The elders of our village saw that their youths have to travel abroad and work hard to find dowry and wedding expenditures. Many of them got addicted and some of them lost their lives. The elders decided to reduce dowry from Afs. 2000,000 to Afs. 400,000. This is an elders’ decision and all of the residents accept it. This custom spread to our neighboring districts and they also obey it.”

Islamic clergy, Mawlawi Wazir Mohammad Sayedi reminds a Hadis that says the best marriage contact has a low dowry.
